DEF!NITION OF FRESH + Franz Interview

Dominican-blooded Washington Heights, New York City rapper presents the ANS-directed music video for “Everything’s On Me”, the new U-Dub-produced single from Heir To The Throne: Rise Of The Bear King, his forthcoming album. Co-head of label Viva La Resistance along with partner Miguel “Scythe” Francisco, his most recent release is this year’s Back 2 The Basics mixtape (listen), which spawned videos for “5am In The Forest” (watch) and “How You Like That” (watch). “‘Everything’s On Me’ is about taking the movement and carrying it on my back,” Franz says. “I was sick and tired of being surrounded by people who didn’t have knowledge about the music industry telling me what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s basically me telling them to back off and let me take care of my business my way. It’s a new day, the time has come to fill the void and claim the heir to the throne.” Heir To The Throne: Rise Of The Bear King drops December 15.

How would you best describe your music?

I would best describe my music as entertaining, insightful, conscious, clever, charismatic, music that's going to change the world one day. I make music for people who don’t have a voice, open-minded individuals willing to learn a thing or two and have fun! My music is and will inspire change for the better. Mark my words.

How did you come up with the concept for “Everything’s On Me”?

The song's concept came about from being tired of letting people do my job and getting it all wrong. I took my career in my hands and made the declaration to everyone who heard it: Do you want to win? Then follow me. I had to step up and take charge.

Since becoming an artist, how has music changed or influenced your life?

Music is everything. Year after year it changes and it never stays the same. Ever since I started making music I had to evolve with the times. Music changed my life because I learned to really be myself, and most importantly love who I've become through the years. Sometimes I hear music from six or eight years ago and I’m like, Wow, I've changed, I can't believe I said that, or did that. Music has taught me everything I know, and I plan to do the same to my listeners, as time goes on if the universe permits it.

Are you expanding the Viva La Resistance roster? Who are your other artists if so?

No plans on expanding the roster, yet. In due time we will though. We're focusing on my career and also learning as we go. There will come a time when we will expand the roster, and when that happens I want to be ready. I’m not gonna pull somebody and sell them a dream when I don’t have the resources to. That’s not fair. I want to be responsible for breaking trailblazers, gamechangers, but until then i have to focus on me.
If you could have the entire world’s attention for one minute what would you say?

Everything you learned in school is a lie. Experience is your best teacher. You don’t need somebody to tell you what’s right or wrong. Go out there and learn for yourself. Educate yourself, never take no for an answer, and work hard. Last but not least, never let go of your inner child because once you do everything won’t make sense anymore. The perception of reality will drive you to the ground, and before you know it death is knocking at your door. The feeling of regret will consume you because you didn’t take chances. More importantly you didn’t live life to its fullest potential.
